Story

Jabel's early life was shaped by tragedy. Only she escaped the terrible bandit attack that destroyed her village. The details of her life between that fateful night and the day she became a paladin are hazy. But she has never wavered from her life's motto: "Never fear darkness. Fear only the despair of the faithless." The red-armored cavalrywoman and her lance have travelled many kingdoms. By her perseverance she has encouraged governors; helped the struggling. She has worked always to remind people to hope for a more glorious turn of history's page. "My child, in this world you will see many things. It is not always easy to tell who is good and who is bad. But no matter who you meet... Remember what I always told you." Jabel's elderly father has a haunting look in his eyes, a kindly man with wisps of gray hair. "Defeat is temporary. True despair is only felt in the absence of conviction and heart." As her father always said these words, Jabel has always memorized them. "The Holy Ecclesia has given me a mission. I must go. There may be troubles on the way... as at home. Look after your mother and yourself. Be here and be safe when I come home. Will you do that for me?" This memory burns like ice. Jabel snaps back to reality. She must have drunk too much that evening. She shakes it off. Then lies down again against the city wall. Jabel's father Aman attained to the rank of Paladin in the Holy Ecclesia, charged with keeping members of the flock safe. It was a job which earned the family great respect in the village. The beginning of the troubles began with Cesares' rebellion and his seizure of the Citadel. The church changed too. Gentle doctrine was discarded. Paladins begun to seize the assets of the faithful. Oppressed by the king on the one hand and on the other hand by the church, the community took out their anger on Jabel and her mom in their father's absence. Jabel's father returned home after many trials, but the sight of their home chilled him to his core. He could not tell who had done it—the Rebels, the church itself, or bandits. Smoke from the village filled the air. Blood flowed in the streets, swallowing up any hope of ever rebuilding... "Not all who sit upon horses are paladins. Not all who wear armor stand with conviction. I have seen the faithful sacrifice themselves for one another. I have seen nobles take pleasure in bullying the weak. We must never judge the content of another's character by the circumstances of their birth." "It is only faith, only the purity of conviction, only idealism, that which you are willing to die for, that makes a person great and a true paladin." "Be prepared to use the rest of your life to find your sacred light. Even if you must fight in a world full of chaos and pain. Are you willing? Even to death?" These words are etched by the entrance of the Imperial museum by the First Paladin of the Imperial Cavalry: Jabel.
